Abstract
The period about two decades ago was characterized by the use of print
media, televisions and radios which were used as tools to disseminate
important information related to a specific issue/topics and also for
creating awareness. These were the only mediums through which
people were being made aware about various issues and events taking
place in a country. There were places where only print media was
available for getting information. However, with the advancement in
technology, particularly the development of the internet which has
created a revolution and allowed people gather as much information as
they required using the facilities provided by the internet. There are
many platforms provided by the internet where people can seek
information about various issues prevailing in their own country and that
too at an amazingly fast speed.
People using social networking sites such as Facebook can create
awareness related to various issues and help in the development of
other individuals. The use of Facebook and other social networking sites
is increasing continuously and with this increase the dependency of the
people to these sites is also increasing.
Although, using Facebook to create a social circle and develop new
relations is not considered as wrong but the excess use of Facebook
might create certain concerns on the lives of people, especially the
youth. The youth that are on Facebook for long hours may find
themselves not able to relate to the reality of interactions. This will
ultimately lead to the decline the speed of overall social development of
the students and result in the increase of isolation.
Hence, in order to address the issues related to the excessive use of
social networking sites by the students and youth of Abu Dhabi, this
research has been undertaken. In this study the situation which is
currently prevailing in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi will be investigate by
conducting a survey to a sample of 50 students and the results will be
presented in the form of pie charts and bar graphs.
Furthermore, a secondary research was conducted to find any work that
has been done on this issue by previous researchers; as well as find any
documents related to this topic. It has been concluded that using and
accessing social networking sites has more negative impact on the
youth of Abu Dhabi than positive.
