Abstract
Readmission rate has been used and evaluated in literature for many years and was studied from
different aspects and was correlated to many factors.
It is costly to any healthcare system. It causes a high burden on healthcare associated with an
estimated annual cost of $17 billion.
in the US, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) started monitoring and
initiated many programs to try to understand the causes of readmissions and how to control them
and minimize the annual costs. This is a literature review of the readmission rate with an
overview of causes and some strategies to minimize it and suggestions for improvement
