These were the only mediums through which people were being made aware about various issues and events taking place in a country. There were places where only print media was available for getting information. However, with the advancement in technology, particularly the development of the internet which has created a revolution and allowed people gather as much information as they required using the facilities provided by the internet. There are many platforms provided by the internet where people can seek information about various issues prevailing in their own country and that too at an amazingly fast speed. People using social networking sites such as Facebook can create awareness related to various issues and help in the development of other individuals. The use of Facebook and other social networking sites is increasing continuously and with this increase the dependency of the people to these sites is also increasing. Although, using Facebook to create a social circle and develop new relations is not considered as wrong but the excess use of Facebook might create certain concerns on the lives of people, especially the youth. - PublicationThe Filipino Community in Abu Dhabi: ‘New National Heroes’(2018)Al Kindi, MaimoonaThe Philippine government’s economic policies of the 1970’s namely its Labor Code of the Philippines of 1974, which included provision for overseas employment, has led to the country becoming the ninth largest country of origin for international migrants today. The policy coincided with a huge demand for foreign workers by Gulf countries, benefiting from the surge in oil prices in 1973 to fund massive infrastructure development projects. The need for these migrants continues today and so the Filipino community in Abu Dhabi established in the 1970’s still remains strong. The UAE provides an interesting environment to study this community, where this paper sets out to understand the motives for migrating to the UAE and to shed light on how members of this community live, spend their income, how much remittances they send home and to whom. Looking at and trying to assess their sense of community and levels of engagement. This was done through the discussion of officially published statistics, conducting a descriptive survey, semi-structure interviews and analysis of media content about, and directed towards, the Filipino community in the emirate.
