The new UAE Maritime Law: Cross-analysis with international legal instruments, customs and practices

The Federal Decree-Law No. (43) of 2023' introduces essential updates aimed at complying national laws and regulations with global maritime practices and standards. This legislation addresses increasing challenges in the maritime industry, including environmental protection, safety procedures and protocols. By implementing principles from established conventions such as the IMO regulations and the United Nations Convention on the Law of Sea (UNCLOS)?, the UAE seeks to strengthen its maritime sector's competitiveness while ensuring compliance with international norms and regulations. A cross-analysis study reveals how the New Law not only reflect's the UAE's commitment to encourage sustainable and secure maritime activities but also points to position the region as a pivotal hub for international business and shipping. This development underlines the UAE's proactive approach to maritime governance, balancing local interests with the complexities of global maritime operations.
