The Influence of Loneliness and Living Alone on the Quality of Life of the Elderly: Evidence from Europe

Europe‘s aging population is increasing, affecting various sectors, including the healthcare
system, labor market, and public services. Loneliness among the elderly has become a
significant concern, especially post-COVID-19. This thesis explores the relationship between
living alone, loneliness, and quality of life (QoL) in elderly Europeans. This research indicates
a positive correlation between living alone and loneliness, with a greater effect on males, and
identifies loneliness as an independent factor decreasing QoL. The study also uncovers the
complex impact living alone has on QoL, underscoring that the feeling of loneliness is
detrimental to well-being, not merely the fact of living alone. Concluding with policy
recommendations emphasizing continuous evaluation and collaboration, this thesis highlights
the need for targeted strategies to understand and alleviate loneliness among Europe’s elderly
while acknowledging cultural diversity and gender differences.
